I pre-ordered this book and really regret it. I wanted help for transitioning my family to a whole foods, plant based diet and I did not find that here. Sample menus would have been so helpful! The recipes are overly complicated and take way too long. I assumed that, since it was written for families, that the recipes would be written with busy moms in mind but that is not the case.

I was honestly a little disappointed in this book. Maybe my expectations were too high but I didn't find it as useful as I had hoped. I found the information for families that it did have was insightful but I really feel there could have been much more. Also, I was wasn't impressed with the recipe section. Most of them were more complicated than I had hoped. The fact that most of the recipes did not have pictures was a real let down. Overall I wouldn't buy again. I think the aim is more for families who want to make the occasional plant based dish or families who are brand new to the concept of a plant based diet. Wish I could return it.

I'm not sure why so many people are worried about the long ingredient lists; my experience with the FOK cookbooks in general has been that the long lists are often simply seasonings, or because there are more vegetables in the recipe in order to provide flavor since there are no oils. I do wish there were photos, but again, this seems a theme in the FOK family of books (and indeed, Fuhrman's books are the same...not that I like it, but there is a theme, here). My almost 2 year old has enjoyed what I've put in front of her, and while I wouldn't call her a picky eater, she doesn't just eat anything I put in front of her, either. My omnivore parents also enjoy the food so far, so all in all, I call it a win. I'd also add that there is a whole section on, "quick and easy," for ideas on what to freeze and what to keep on hand to facilitate quick prep during the week. Example, I made the mushroom gravy and was able to use it for several dishes during the week, including a standard, "bowl," with beans, rice, and greens added to it. Making date paste by the pound and having half in the freezer and half in the fridge facilitates making things quickly and easily, and since it's a staple item to use in this lifestyle, worth having. I do the same when making "mayo" (animal and oil free) or ketchup, so I don't see the difference in doing it for some date paste. 4 stars because of the lack of pictures; but the recipes are sound, and my experience is that with a bit of prep, they don't seem to take as long as others imply here. I do use a food processor or chopper regularly to speed things up, and I also do a lot of prep on my weekends so that vegetables are already clean/cut, and I also take advantage of frozen veggies from Costco which may be why I can pull some of these things together quickly during the week.

I am a plant based eater (McDougall diet). My family is not. I was hoping the book would have more kid friendly recipes that are super easy to make and would appeal to my child. A child who is a picky eater is not going to plow into something that has 10-15 ingredients. If you have a family that is already eating rather healthy, just not plant based, this book would work very well. That said, I DO like the recipes. I have tagged SO many recipes in the book to make. I just made the black bean brownies and they are wonderful (although I had to do a few ingredient substitutions because who has sorghum flour and date paste just laying around?) While my first impression is that the recipes are wonderful, I already know they would not be good for a reluctant/picky family member. I also worry about the long list of ingredients used in each recipe; I wonder how many working families really have time to devote to this. One other small niggle I wonder about is why the authors of the book are prominently featured on the back cover, but there is NO information on the cover about Darshana Thacker who created all of the recipes. It seems a bit odd that she didn't get billing on the back cover.

Seems like a great book. There is a motivational section st the beginning. The biggest flaw is that the recipes don't have pictures. Especially a book that is aimed at kids. I would have liked to put the book in front of my daughter, let her look at the pictures and thave her tell me what she wants to eat.

What a bummer. I was so looking forward to some kid-friendly recipes that were somewhat quick and easy. As a Fork Over Knifer who owns the first book, I understood the premise of the eating plan but I was really searching for some great recipes to have on hand to introduce my young kids to plant based eating. This book is great as a recipe book (hence the 3 star rating) for someone wanting to get into the Forks Over Knives way of eating BUT as a "kid-friendly" book......not in my opinion. Also, these recipes are far from quick. Not necessarily complicated, just involved and not what I would call weeknight-friendly. I've had better luck getting ideas on Pinterest and YouTube. Sent it back.

I was really disappointed by some of the recipes, but it’s still a potentially useful resource. The first 75 pages introduce the plant-based diet and offer advice for parents. I would advise going with your gut regarding herbs and flavorings. For example: Pad Thai had a peanut sauce, instead of a simple traditional sauce, with finely chopped peanuts as a condiment. It called for a lot of tomato paste instead of a little catsup, which destroyed the flavor balance of the sauce. Red Lentil Fries called for a LONG list of flavorings (too much for most kids), took a LOT of time, and they just weren’t worth the investment.

The information section is okay but is mostly useful for families who are raising kids plant-based from the start; there's less helpful information for those of us who are transitioning somewhat reluctant kids to whole-foods, plant-based options. I agree with the previous reviewers that the recipes are time-consuming, using not-so-kid-friendly ingredients. I've only made one in the month I've had it because the recipes are just too complicated and my kids probably wouldn't eat them. I'm disappointed with it from a family-friendly perspective. Who has time to cook all these things when you have kids?
