Hailed as the "father of Yoga in the West," Paramahansa Yogananda is regarded as one of the great spiritual figures of our time. Born in northern India, he came to the United States in 1920, where for more than 30 years he taught the ancient science of meditation and the art of balanced spiritual living. That same year he founded Self-Realization Fellowship, to disseminate his writings and teachings worldwide. Through his best-selling classic, Autobiography of a Yogi, and his numerous other books, he has introduced millions throughout the world to the spiritual principles of yoga meditation and the universal truths underlying all world religions.
Paramahansa Yogananda Autor des klassischen Bestsellers Autobiographie eines Yogi wird als »Vater des Yoga im Westen« gepriesen und gilt als eine der herausragenden geistigen Persönlichkeiten unserer Zeit. Er wurde am 5. Januar 1893 in Nordindien geboren und widmete sein Leben dem Ziel, Menschen aller Rassen und Bekenntnisse dabei zu helfen, in ihrem Leben die Schönheit, den Edelmut und die Göttlichkeit des menschlichen Geistes immer mehr zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Im Jahre 1915 erhielt Yogananda sein Diplom von der Universität Kalkutta. Kurze Zeit später wurde er mit einem feierlichen Gelöbnis als Mönch in den ehrwürdigen indischen Swami-Orden aufgenommen. Zwei Jahre später begann er sein Lebenswerk, als er eine Knabenschule für richtige Lebensweise gründete, in der sowohl die traditionellen Fächer als auch Yoga und geistige Ideale unterrichtet wurden; inzwischen gibt es bereits 21 Erziehungsinstitute dieser Art in ganz Indien. 1920 wurde er nach Boston eingeladen, wo er als Delegierter Indiens an einem Internationalen Kongress religiöser Liberaler teilnahm. Seine Ansprache auf diesem Kongress und seine darauf folgenden Vorträge an der Ostküste der USA wurden begeistert aufgenommen. 1924 trat er eine Vortragsreise durch die ganzen Vereinigten Staaten an. Während der nächsten drei Jahrzehnte trug Paramahansa Yogananda in großem Maße dazu bei, dass der Westen die geistige Weisheit des Ostens kennen und schätzen lernte. In Los Angeles gründete er den Internationalen Hauptsitz der Self-Realization Fellowship, der überkonfessionellen religiösen Gemeinschaft, die er 1920 ins Leben gerufen hatte. Durch seine Schriften und ausgedehnten Vortragsreisen sowie durch die Gründung zahlreicher Tempel und Meditationszentren der Self-Realization Fellowship hat er Hunderttausende von Wahrheitssuchern mit der ehrwürdigen Wissenschaft und Philosophie des Yoga bekannt gemacht, dessen Meditationsmethoden universell anwendbar sind. Heute wird das von Paramahansa Yogananda begonnene geistige und humanitäre Werk von Sri Mrinalini Mata weitergeführt, einer seiner engsten Jüngerinnen und Präsidentin der Self-Realization Fellowship / Yogoda Society of India seit 2011. Neben der Veröffentlichung von Paramahansa Yoganandas Schriften, Vorträgen und Ansprachen (einschließlich einer umfangreichen Serie gedruckter Lehrbriefe der Self-Realization Fellowship zum Selbststudium) betreut die Gemeinschaft die Tempel, Stätten der inneren Einkehr (Retreats) und Zentren in allen Teilen der Welt.
