This book provided an easy way for me to teach younger siblings about their older siblings's disability. Funny pictures combined with educational truth made them very interested.
First, my aspire 7-year-old son LOVES this book and he picks it to read together about every other day. The reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is that it’s not an easy bookto read with an Aspie child. It’s very long (which he loves). And it has examples of things that Aspie’s don’t understand and I spend a lot of time explaining the examples to him - over and over again, lol. I’m not a fan of the page that talks about parents being sad that they don’t know what their child is thinking and the page about family members thinking they could raise the child better (in our day...). I’m not sure who those pages are written for. Neither of those are things I want to share with my son. Here’s my child who LNOWS that I’m his best friend and he reads in a book that his autism makes me feel like I don’t know him. He doesn’t need that message.
I was excited to get this book, but though it may appear cute paired with the cat pictures, it is not as positive/empowering/hopeful of a message for a child with Aspergers as I thought it might be. I am not sure that some pages will make the child feel good about having the condition.Examples of pages that made me cringe: “Other kids make friends but don’t invite him to play, and he may be bullied.â€â€œSometimes his parents feel sad, wondering why they can’t understand their own childâ€â€œSometimes his relatives think they could bring him up better than his parents canâ€â€œWhen people talk to him, he may refuse to look at them. Yet when HE talks,he goes on and on about the same topic, and bores everyone silly.â€â€œ Often an Asperger child has a great sense of humor, but he doesn’t always think about what he is saying and those around him may cringe with embarrassmentâ€I know these may not sound terrible although I am envisioning reading this to a newly diagnosed child...I thought it would be more of a positive and inspirational book to be proud of who they are, exactly as they are. There are some of those positive messages in here, but overall the book left me feeling sad about Aspergers, which is not the way I’d like to present it. If anyone knows a book that is written in a positive manner for kids that truly accepts and celebrates the neurodiversity autism brings, please comment!
I have Asperger's now linked with ASD. I was part of the missing generation for those who didn't get caught as a child but was discovered as an adult. I bought this book to explain to my young children why their parent is a little different. The book is simple in wording but effective in listing out a few of the traits that I carry with me. I read it to them before bed and told them they can ask questions. We have cats so the images and themes translate well to them. It also brought a smile to face to know that someone wrote this and understands what we are like.
This book totally nailed my daughter's autism/asperger syndrome behaviors. Love, love, love this book. It helped my daughter understand why she does certain things that others do not.for instance, cats don't mind the cold - She is apt to run out of the house without a coat when it's snowy because she doesn't really feel it.Terrific, humorous book explaining autism behaviors to those with autism as well as to family members who may not get it...
Our son was recently diagnosed with level 1 Autism. Which we guess is what used to be called in the medical community as Asperger Syndrome. Our son's therapist said that this book is great for helping younger children understand the diagnosis through something they usually look at fondly. Which is to say soft non judgmental animals. Our son really likes this book and it even surprised my wife and I with how much we could relate to how parents my act and feel around their child. I highly recommend this book and I hope it gets an updated version in the future.
I see my childhood in this book. Especially the cat in the snow. lol. I heard stories from elders we lived near, all my life about the time I was 2 yrs. old, and they had to call my mom to let her know I was out in 3 ft. of snow in the front yard playing naked. Snow suit laying across different parts of the yard.lol. It's really an adorable read for the Autie/Aspie and loved ones of them alike.
In thirty years of living with an adult Aspie, I can't recommend this delightful book enough. We have found Hoopman's insightful books more helpful than any Asperger themed textbooks, she really understands in a remarkable way. Each photo and caption describes the finer nuances of Asperger Syndrome beautifully; my Aspie-cat-person enjoys reading it too. "I like black mice and brown mice and white mice" (Hoopman 2006:33); I have indeed heard, "Did you know that a mouse and a man share 97.5% of the same DNA?" (2006:35). Hoopman's combination of imagery and text are tremendously helpful in better understanding particular Asperger behaviors that are part of the wonder of living with a brilliant, sensitive, unique "eccentric" Aspie. Even down to the exceptional hearing, sense of smell, need for predictable meals, bonding with those much older, fascination and curiosity with numerous subjects with an amazing attention to detail. Last evening, those hyper-sensitive ears prompted the following: "Is that annoying squeaking sound a bird, or the window!? If that's a bird, it needs to go to bed." It was a bird. Hoopman's insights have increased my compassion, and encourage Aspies to have more self-acceptance. Also excellent: Inside Asperger's Looking Out. Enjoy!
This is a lovely book overall, filled with delightful photographs of kittens and cats paired with text that draws parallels between typical cat behaviors and those of a human being with Aspergers. The only thing I didn't like about it is that it perpetuates the myth that people with Aspergers don't like to be held or give/receive hugs. I myself have Aspergers, and hugs from my closest loved ones are actually one of my most favorite things.
